Hi gang! I’m back this week with a sweet little fanzine that was published in 1971 by Gary Groth through his publishing company; Fantagraphics. The fanzine is entitled; A Selection of Fictional Narratives by Dennis Fujitake.
It is only sixteen (16) pages long and basically is a look at the storytelling of artist Dennis Fujitake. The book contains two stories and is completely written and drawn by Fiujitake. Plus there is the front cover and an editorial/indicia page. It’s all in beautiful black and white, with nary a color to be found! That’s it!
Here is that front cover, simple but striking:
The first story is entitled; The Pearl and it runs eight (8) pages. A typical barbarian type strip, you could say, with a couple of twists to the story! The second strip is; A Better Choice. It only runs for five (5) pages and is more a sci-fi/end of the world story. Again, pretty typical, but with a nice twist ending, well actually two final twists that makes it worthwhile.
It sold for only 75 cents back in 1971, so it was well worth it at the time and it showcased an up and coming fan artist, who was trying to make it into the professional ranks.
I’m not sure, but these might have been something Fujitake did for his portfolio at the time, or something he did specifically for his friend Groth to publish to get his company on the map.
Both the artist and the publisher are still around, so if either happen to see this post, please leave a comment and provide the actual background on this project, if you would be so kind.
That’s it for this week’s Fabulous Find. Short, but sweet. If you get a chance, definitely add this to your collection! And of course, please return next week for a RETRO REVIEW or yet another Fabulous Find. Til then …
be seeing you …
I’m trying to get a hold of Dennis Fujitake to commission a comic book cover. Can you by any chance provide me with some contact info, preferably an email address?
Sorry Michael, but we don’t have any contact info for Dennis.
